LETTER: Reasons for Walkout were misunderstood

Walkley and Canfield

Dear Editor,

On Wednesday, March 14th I decided to participate in the National Walkout with a group of students. Many students around the country walked for gun rights and gun violence. I, myself walked for a different reason.

On Wednesday I walked for those who have lost their lives to gun violence and for those who have been affected by mental health. Many can assume that by protesting that I am for more gun laws. Which is not the case in any way, shape or form. Being an avid hunter here in Philipsburg, Montana I have grown up around guns my whole life. Which is why I chose to walk for another reason that is much deeper than just guns. In the United States there is a huge lack of help when it comes to mental health. In the United States alone over forty million people are affected by mental health and only about fifty percent of them receive the right treatment they need. I would like to see a change in that so I am working to allow more students to gain knowledge on mental health and where to seek help if they choose so. Bringing awareness to mental health is important important to me and that is what helped me to walk out on Wednesday.

Thank you,

Katelin Walkley
