GREAT FALLS - The Granite Doubles Team of Jaden Comings and Sarah Goff played through three days of tough tennis to claim fifth place in the 2018 MHSA State Class B/C Tournament in Great Falls. The event was from May 17-19.
The Lady Prospectors started Thursday with a bye, advancing them into the second round of the tournament where they faced Keefer and Blackwell of Forsythe, dispatching them quickly 6-1, 6-1. The win put them into the tournament's Elite 8 on Friday.
"I can tell you that I'm beyond proud of these girls," said Granite Head Coach Meredith McDonald. "This season they grew so much as a team. They really started to move across he court with fluidity and unity. Even against tough opponents, they never lost their composure and kept on fighting. Their tennis improved immensely, both offensively and defensively."
Comings & Goff started Day 2 of the tournament playing the eventual second place team of Pruttis/Swank of Chinook. The locals played well, but eventually fell 6-1, 6-4. The loss sent them into the Consolation Bracket later that day where they faced Owens/Scheaffer of Harlem and came away with a three set victory, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
Saturday's play was for all the marbles, with the locals splitting matches, 2-1. They beat the Lone Peak tandem of Hoffman/Swenson 7-5, 6-4. They lost to Jones/VanDyke of Conrad 7-6, 6-3 before rallying to beat Job/Burke of Loyola 6-2, 6-4.
"It was a wonderful season as a whole," continued McDonald, "and I'm so happy that it ended the way it did with a successful Divisionals for the entire team and a fifth place finish at State for Jaden and Sarah.
